Media reported on TikTok's preparations to shut down the app in the US

Social network TikTok is going to stop working of its application in the United States on Sunday, January 19. The Information reported on January 15.

At the time, Congress overwhelmingly approved the measure, claiming possible surveillance of US citizens through the app by the Chinese government. The ban will be lifted if ByteDance sells the U.S. division of TikTok within nine months of the law's passage. They expire at the end of December.

The social network, in turn, said it would defend its rights to operate in the US in court, and the ban would "destroy 7 million companies and disenfranchise 170 million Americans".

Later, on December 28, US President-elect Donald Trump petitioned the Supreme Court to suspend the law threatening to ban the TikTok social network. He did not take a firm position on the constitutionality of the law, which is set to take effect on January 19, although he said it raises "broad and troubling" concerns about free speech.
