The European Union (EU) may impose restrictions on exports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) and aluminum, as well as sanctions against dozens of Russian ships as part of new measures against Russia. This was reported by Bloomberg news agency on January 15, citing a source.

"The EU is considering imposing restrictions on imports of Russian aluminum and phasing out of liquefied natural gas <...> The draft measures, which will be part of the bloc's 16th package of sanctions, include restrictions on dozens more ships," the agency said.

It is specified that in addition, one of the possible measures against the Russian Federation may be the disconnection of a number of new banks from the payment system Swift.

Earlier, on January 6, British diplomat Ian Proud said that the economic conflict, deployed by Western countries against Russia, has not led to any significant results.

Prior to that, on December 28, former French MEP Hervé Juvene told Izvestia that the EU's anti-Russian sanctions have not worked and that Russia has only strengthened its economy against the backdrop of the sanctions

On December 16, the EU foreign ministers finally approved the 15th package of economic and individual sanctions against Russia. It is noted that the list of sanctions includes 54 individuals and 30 organizations. They also added 52 vessels, which are subject to bans on access to the port and on the provision of a wide range of services related to maritime transportation.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the 15th package of restrictions illegal and pointed out that it threatens global energy security.

Western countries have tightened sanctions pressure on Russia in connection with the special operation to protect Donbass. The decision to launch it was announced on February 24, 2022 after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
