At least 12 people have been infected with hepatitis A after consuming blueberries in the Netherlands. This was reported on January 14 by the news portal Nu.nl with reference to the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).

The RIVM specified that two people who fell ill required hospitalization. According to the institute, there could be many more infected people. This is due to the fact that most people get hepatitis A in a mild form and may not notice the symptoms.

It is noted that all those infected bought frozen berries in the country's supermarket chain Albert Heijn. The company explained that the virus was detected in 1 kg bags of berries with an expiration date until April 14, 2026. Albert Heijn has withdrawn all such packages from stores, and urged customers to return those already purchased to retail outlets. The company added that the cost of the products will be refunded even if the package is opened.

Earlier, on January 7, a patient hospitalized with a severe form of bird flu (H5N1) died in a hospital in the United States. This is the first recorded case of a human death from the H5N1 virus. The man contracted it after coming into contact with a flock of wild birds in the backyard of his home. It was noted that the patient had comorbidities.
