- WP reported on a security breach by New Orleans authorities before the terrorist attack

Authorities in New Orleans, even before the terrorist attack that drove into the crowd on January 1, violated security requirements by leaving the entrance to a pedestrian street unblocked. This was reported by The Washington Post on January 13.
The publication also specified that on the night of the hit-and-run crowd, city officials parked a police SUV to block the main entrance to Bourbon Street for the safety of pedestrians. In doing so, the gap was more than twice as wide as the assailant's car.
"This was not a momentary lapse of safety: at various times earlier that evening, the gap between the police SUV and the nearest structural barrier was more than twice as wide as the assailant's car," the publication said.
As the newspaper pointed out, the hydraulic metal barricade was not raised the night of the attack. That said, Bourbon Street has long been considered vulnerable to hit-and-run vehicles.
On New Year's Eve in New Orleans, a truck struck a crowd of people on Bourbon Street, then the driver got out and started shooting. Law enforcement returned fire and eliminated him. According to the latest reports, at least 10 people were killed and 35 others were injured.
The FBI specified that two police officers were wounded in the shooting, and explosive devices were found at the scene of the tragedy. It is preliminarily established that most of the victims are local residents. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Russians, preliminary, were not injured in the incident in New Orleans.
On January 6, it became known that the current U.S. President Joe Biden and his wife Jill arrived in New Orleans to address the families of those killed and injured in the attack.
