- Fitzo offered Zelensky to meet against the background of the situation with gas transit

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo has invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose term of office expires on 20 May 2024, to a meeting amid the stoppage of gas transit to Europe through Ukraine. Fitzo published the appeal on January 13 in the social network Facebook (owned by Meta, an organization recognized as extremist in Russia).
"Let me, as the highest representative of the Slovak executive, invite you to the talks," Fitzo said.
The prime minister noted that the meeting could take place on Slovak territory near the border with Ukraine. He added that such a conversation would create prerequisites for an "open conversation" about gas supplies to Slovakia and other countries via Ukraine.
On 10 January, European Commission (EC) spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said at a briefing in Brussels that Ukraine would not participate in the working group organized by the European Union (EU) and Slovakia to find a solution to the energy issue amid the cessation of gas transit from Russia through Ukrainian territory.
Earlier, on January 9, Fitzo threatened Kiev to stop humanitarian aid because of the decision to stop the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine. The politician noted that Slovakia, as a member of the European Union, has the right of veto, which it can use to block some decisions taken in the European Union (EU).
In late August, the Ukrainian president said that the country would not prolong the gas transit agreement with Russia, which expires at the end of 2024. Russian President Vladimir Putin later said that the country was not giving up gas transit through Ukraine.
On January 1, 2025, Gazprom said it would suspend gas supplies through Ukraine. On the same day, Fitzo said that this would have drastic consequences for the EU, but not for Russia.
