Transnistria says critical situation after gas transit stopped

Transnistria is in a critical situation after gas supplies were cut off, the head of the government of the unrecognized republic, Alexander Rosenberg, said at a meeting of the operative staff on 13 January.
"Opening the meeting, Alexander Rosenberg presented current macroeconomic indicators, emphasizing that the republic is in 'very difficult, almost critical conditions,'" the DMR government website reported.
Rosenberg pointed out that the interruption of natural gas supplies has led to the shutdown of most enterprises - except for those that produce food.
According to him, in such conditions energy resources are distributed taking into account the vital needs of citizens and the state. The population, as well as health care and social security systems are provided first of all. Because of the shortage, some enterprises have switched to a night schedule.
Earlier, on January 10, Transnistria extended the economic emergency regime for another 30 days. Due to the cessation of gas supplies, it will remain in force until February 8.
Before that, on January 9, the head of the Transnistrian Foreign Ministry, Vitaly Ignatiev, said that the unrecognized republic had recorded cases of deaths of people trying to warm themselves with the help of stoves against the background of the energy crisis. At the same time, it is impossible to increase electricity generation in the republic without gas supplies, he said.
Gas supplies from Russia to Moldova and Transnistria stopped on January 1 due to Ukraine 's refusal to extend the agreement on transit through its territory and Moldova's debts to Gazprom, which Chisinau does not recognize.
