Activists of the Just Stop Oil movement left inscriptions with orange paint on the tomb of English scientist Charles Darwin in Westminster Abbey. This was reported by The Independent.

Two elderly British women took part in the protest. They left on the tombstone the inscription "1.5 degrees dead". As the publication explained, it was a reference to a recent report that 2024 was the hottest year on record and the first year in which average global temperatures exceeded pre-industrial levels by 1.5 degrees Celsius.

"We wrote this specifically on Darwin's grave because he would have rolled over in his coffin because of the sixth mass extinction that is happening now," one of the activists said.

The women were detained by police on suspicion of damaging Westminster Abbey. Abbey staff have begun cleaning the gravestone. The building remains open to the public.

Earlier, on June 19, 2024, Just Stop Oil activists painted Stonehenge in orange. Thus they protested against the extraction of oil, coal and gas. At that time, representatives of the movement said that there are similar stone structures on any continent and people who pay attention to them do not think enough about climate problems.
