Slovakia says it wants to build trusting relations with Russia


Vice-Speaker of the Slovak parliament Andrei Danko said at a meeting with State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin that the country respects Russia and wants to build relations with it on trust. This is reported on January 13 on the official website of the State Duma.
"We want to build our relations on the trust that we have towards the Russian Federation. Indeed, it should be said that Russia was able to overcome different challenges under the leadership of President [Russian President Vladimir Putin]. And that is why we have respect for the Russian Federation," the publication said.
It is noted that the meeting discussed the issues of activation of Russian-Slovak cooperation at the interparliamentary level. Volodin emphasized that the conversation was especially important in the context of recent talks between Putin and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo.
The Chairman of the State Duma noted that Russia also respects Slovakia and its citizens.
On the eve, January 12, it became known that Danko arrived in Moscow, the board of the official landed at Vnukovo airport. Prior to that, the politician himself noted that he may visit Russia in January to help restore the dialog with the Russian Federation, which was started by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo, who visited the country in December 2024.
Danko indicated that he plans to meet personally with Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, as well as conduct ministerial-level visits. According to the politician, his goal is to "open the eyes of people in Slovakia."
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Slovak prime minister held talks in the Kremlin on December 22, 2024. Fitzo described his visit to Russia as a reaction to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's (term expired May 20, 2024) announcement that he would stop the transit of Russian gas to Europe. The Ukrainian conflict was one of the topics of the meeting.
