Moldova's energy sector has been destabilized artificially, former prime minister of the republic and leader of the opposition Future of Moldova party Vasily Tarlev said on 13 January.

"Destabilization of the energy sector activity in Moldova has been created artificially. The current government is responsible for the nightmare that our fellow citizens, including the residents of the left bank of the Dniester, are experiencing. <...> Their goal is to destroy Moldova!" - he wrote in his Telegram channel.

In Tarlev's opinion, the results of the rule of the current Moldovan authorities were the inflated prices for all goods and services, especially for electricity and gas.

The former prime minister emphasized that the country's citizens are becoming poorer every day due to the incompetence of the leadership.

Earlier, on January 10, the chairman of the Moldovan opposition bloc "Victory", Ilan Shor, announced the start of gas compensation payments in some Moldovan districts. He criticized President Maia Sandu and the country's government, calling them guilty of the energy crisis.

Prior to that, on January 6, the head of Transnistria Vadim Krasnoselsky noted that the reason for the energy problems that particularly affected the region was Moldova's refusal to repay its debt to Gazprom. At the same time, Chisinau did not provide any assistance to the DMR, he pointed out.

On January 1, 2025 , Gazprom stopped supplying fuel to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system due to Kiev's refusal to extend the transit agreement. Also, gas stopped flowing due to debts not repaid by Moldova, which Chisinau does not recognize.
