- Canada's Foreign Ministry has not ruled out halting energy exports to the U.S. in response to the duties

Canada may stop exporting electricity to the United States in response to the threats of US President-elect Donald Trump to impose duties. This was announced by Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly on January 13.
In an interview with CTV, the Canadian Foreign Minister said that "all issues are being discussed" regarding the government's readiness to stop exporting electricity south of the border.
On November 26, 2024, Trump noted that already on the day of his inauguration, January 20, he will impose import duties of 25% on all Canadian and Mexican goods if Ottawa and Mexico City fail to fundamentally change the situation with migration to the United States through the Canadian and Mexican borders.
The day before, Bloomberg reported that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Ottawa is ready to respond by imposing retaliatory duties against the United States if Trump carries out his threat to start a trade war in North America. At the same time, he noted that the Canadian government is not planning a trade war with the new White House administration.
Prior to that, on January 10, Bloomberg news agency, citing sources, reported that Canada is preparing retaliatory monetary levies on US products if the US president-elect carries out his threats to impose 25 percent duties on Canadian goods. It is specified that trade duties on American products will be imposed on a dollar-for-dollar basis, which implies the imposition of interest rates similar to those that Trump would impose against Canadian products.
Before that, on December 17, 2024, the TV channel CBC with reference to the Minister of Public Security of Canada Dominic LeBlanc reported that the country will spend $900 million to ensure the protection of the border with the United States. It is noted that this initiative arose after the threat of the elected President of the United States to impose a tariff of 25% on Canadian imports.
