The taste of rice in China, including its appearance and texture, has improved over the past 16 years. The South China Morning Post reported on Jan. 13.

"The rice taste assessment is based on a national standard updated in 2008, which evaluates the crop in terms of appearance, smell, palatability, taste and texture of cold rice to produce a composite rating," the publication said.

According to the publication, genetic improvements and control of growing conditions have played an important role in improving the quality of rice.

It is noted that China is the largest producer of rice in the world, which last year accounted for 28% of total world production.

Earlier, on July 4, 2024, scientists from Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) created a highly sensitive gas analyzer. Such a device can determine by smell such qualities as freshness, ripeness or degree of spoilage of food products. At the same time, thanks to statistical analysis, experts have identified points that indicate irreversible changes. This information will help predict when food will spoil.
