According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there is no threat of a pandemic of metapneumovirus infection in the world. This was announced by the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto on January 12.

"This evening we consulted by phone with my good old colleague and friend Tedros Gebrekhesh, director general of the World Health Organization," he wrote on his Facebook page (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in Russia).

Szijjártó expressed confidence that the world should not expect the threat of a pandemic of metapneumovirus infection. He also noted that the virus, which has appeared several times in a similar form, has already been well studied by WHO experts.

"My friend Tedrosh reassured me <...> and assured me that there is no threat of a public health emergency in the world at present," he concluded.

Earlier, on Jan. 5, China's disease control and prevention office, citing the results of respiratory samples analyzed from Dec. 23 to 29, 2024, reported an outbreak of human metapneumovirus in the country. It noted that it is actively spreading throughout the territory of China and mainly children under 14 years of age are exposed to the disease. People living in the northern provinces of the country are most often infected.

Later, Rospotrebnadzor reported that specialists are monitoring the epidemiological situation related to the increase in the number of metapneumovirus diseases in the PRC.

On the same day, Georgy Vikulov, candidate of medical sciences, director of the Research Center for Prevention and Treatment of Viral Infections, head of the herpes center of Moscow State University, immunologist-allergologist, infectious disease specialist, told Izvestia who is most at risk of infection with metapneumovirus and what is its incubation period.
