- Wagenknecht called sanctions against Russian Federation an attempt to enrich U.S. companies

The anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the European Union (EU) and the United States are aimed at enriching and giving an advantage to American companies. This statement was made by the leader of the German party Sarah Wagenknecht's Union for Reason and Justice, Sarah Wagenknecht, during a speech at the party congress in Bonn.
She said the restrictions have nothing to do with the conflict in Ukraine and have no impact on it.
"[Sanctions] This is just an economic stimulus program for the US economy and a killer program for German and European companies," ARD quoted her as saying.
At the same time, Wagenknecht said the restrictions against Russia, among others, have nothing to do with morality, human rights and love of peace.
She added that the time has already come to stop the arms race to preserve peace. The politician specified that it is impossible to support the sanctions policy against Russia and China if Germans want "the country to stand on its feet."
In addition, the politician called not to follow international ideology and to resume gas supplies to Germany regardless of whether it will be Russian or American resource.
Earlier in the day, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that the new package of US sanctions against Russia will create serious energy problems for Central Europe. According to him, Budapest will work with partners to ensure that the sanctions do not significantly increase the cost of fuel.
The US authorities extended sanctions against a number of Russian corporations and their executives on January 10. The list includes Gazprom Neft and its head Alexander Dyukov, Surgutneftegaz, as well as the head of Zarubezhneft, Sergei Kudryashov. In addition, restrictions were imposed on the CEO of Rosatom Alexei Likhachev. The list also included Gazprom's medium-tonnage natural gas liquefaction plant on the Baltic coast, Gazprom LNG Portovaya.
Commenting on the new US measures against Russia, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Izvestia that incumbent US President Joe Biden was not going to "leave a trace in history" but "only leave a trace " before his departure. Later, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Washington's actions to impose new anti-Russian sanctions would not go unanswered and would be taken into account when building Russia's foreign economic strategy.
Western countries increased sanctions pressure on Russia after the start of the special operation to protect civilians in Donbass, which was announced on February 24, 2022.
