U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, speaking about his plans to annex Greenland, is considering all options for the implementation of such a scenario, up to and including force. This was stated by Trump's adviser Michael Waltz on January 12.

He noted that the United States has at its disposal "a number of ways" that it can use to change existing agreements with Greenland.

"President Trump always leaves all options available. <...> We hear from the people of Greenland that they are pushing the issue of independence, which opens up many other possibilities, but President Trump, unlike his predecessor, is not going to rule out any options," Waltz told ABC television.

The adviser to the president-elect indicated that Washington is watching Moscow, which has 60 icebreakers and is opening new shipping lanes for oil and gas.

"Our great friends and allies in Denmark literally have a couple of 'dog sleds' in Greenland. <...> Enough is enough with our enemies coming into the Western Hemisphere to threaten our national security. President Trump is ready to take serious steps to ensure that the U.S. is well-defended," Waltz noted.

Earlier, on January 11, international law expert Christian Marxsen said that a U.S. attack on Greenland would be the reason for the collapse of NATO. According to the expert, in the case of a United States attack on Greenland, the ability to provide assistance to the affected country would be left to the discretion of other member states.

American political scientist Malek Dudakov noted on January 10 that extravagant statements and publications about the accession of Canada and Greenland to the United States are used by Trump to influence the domestic political situation in these countries. Dudakov noted that in Canada, Trump's pressure and threats have already led to the collapse of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government and likely early elections.

Before that, on January 7, Greenland's Danish Member of Parliament Aja Chemnitz emphasized that Greenland is not and will not be for sale, but Denmark can cooperate more with the United States. The politician emphasized that establishing closer contacts with the US is as important for Greenland as maintaining cooperation with Denmark.

Earlier, on December 22, 2024, Trump, while announcing the appointment of an ambassador to Denmark, stressed that for the US "ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity." The American politician expressed interest in buying Greenland from Denmark back in 2019. Then he received a rejection.
