The best historical example for Ukraine is the division of Germany after the Second World War. This statement was made by former US State Department special representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker on January 12.

"While the German constitution always implied a desire to unite all German states, at the same time everyone was in agreement that it would not be done militarily," he said in an interview with The Cipher Brief published on YouTube.

According to him, Ukraine should adopt the same position regarding the new Russian territories. Volker noted that in this way Kiev can simply refuse to resolve the conflict through military action.

Earlier, on January 4, the Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) reported that an increasing part of the population in Ukraine favored the idea of ceding part of the country's territory to Russia in exchange for peace. It is noted that this idea seems to have taken hold in the minds of many citizens of the country.

Before that, on December 31, 2024, the British newspaper Financial Times reported that in 2025 Ukraine will have to sign a peace treaty with Russia. As part of it, Kiev will give up actual claims to the territories liberated by Moscow. This will be done in exchange for security guarantees from the United States. In addition, Ukraine's accession to NATO will be suspended.

Slovak Defense Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kaliniak said on December 30 that Ukraine would have to come to terms with the loss of some territories.

The special operation to protect Donbas, the start of which was announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the worsening situation in the region.
