On 12 January, journalist Pavlo Zarubin published in his Telegram channel footage of Russian President Vladimir Putin 's direct line with Ukrainians, which took place in 2004.

According to the video, the Russian leader visited Kiev to take part in the celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the country's liberation from fascist invaders. Then, under a salute, he spoke to the citizens of Ukraine, including journalists.

A direct line with the Ukrainian people was held on October 26, 2004.

Earlier, on December 22, 2024, Putin and the Slovak Prime Minister held talks in the Kremlin. Fitzo described his visit to Russia as a reaction to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's (term expired May 20, 2024) announcement that he would stop transit of Russian gas to Europe. The Ukrainian conflict was one of the topics of the meeting.

Later, the Russian president shared that during his visit to Moscow, Fitzo proposed to make Slovakia a negotiating platform on Ukraine. The Russian side is not against such a scenario, the head of state specified.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
