Russian army repels five counterattacks by the AFU in Kursk region

The northern grouping of Russian troops repulsed five counterattacks by Ukrainian militants in Kursk Region, the Russian Defense Ministry said on January 12.

"Five counterattacks of the enemy have been repulsed," the report said.

Units of the North group also defeated formations of seven brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).

In addition, the enemy's manpower and equipment were hit by air strikes and artillery fire in the areas of populated areas of Kursk and Sumy regions.

The losses of the AFU in the Kursk direction amounted to more than 350 servicemen during the day. At the same time, the Ukrainian army lost a tank, four infantry fighting vehicles, five armored personnel carriers, 12 armored combat vehicles, four cars, a self-propelled artillery unit, seven mortars, a REB station and a recovery vehicle.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that an Army aviation crew on a Ka-52 helicopter hit armored vehicles and AFU manpower in the Kursk border region with missiles. The pilots carried out a combat mission at the given coordinates as part of the support of the "North" group.

The AFU attacked Russian positions in the border areas of the Kursk region on August 6 last year. The situation in the region was recognized as a federal emergency. The liquidation of the Ukrainian militants who invaded the Russian territory is underway.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the beginning of which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
