Expert points to NATO disintegration if the US attacks Greenland

The US attack on Greenland will be the reason for the collapse of NATO. International law expert Christian Marxsen said in an interview with Tagesspiegel on January 11.
"The US is the most important power of the alliance and would strike a blow to its spirit if it attacked Greenland. Then NATO would really come to an end," the specialist explained.
Marxsen specified that the military-political bloc is envisioned to repel attacks from outside. According to the expert, in the case of an attack by the United States on Greenland, the possibility of providing assistance to the affected country would be left to the discretion of other member states.
"What exactly will be undertaken in the event of an attack is left to the discretion of the state concerned ... Germany could take part in military action or send a letter of condolence," Markssen said.
On the eve, American political scientist Malek Dudakov said that extravagant statements and publications about the accession of Canada and Greenland to the United States are used by the elected President of the United States Donald Trump to influence the domestic political situation in these countries. Dudakov noted that in Canada, Trump's pressure and threats have already led to the collapse of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government and likely early elections.
Earlier, on January 7, Greenland's Danish Member of Parliament Aja Chemnitz said that Greenland is not and will not be for sale, but Denmark can cooperate more with the United States. The politician emphasized that establishing closer contacts with the US is as important for Greenland as maintaining cooperation with Denmark.
Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said on December 25 that the country has prepared a new defense package to protect Greenland, with at least $1.5 billion earmarked.
Earlier, on December 22, 2024, Trump, announcing the appointment of an ambassador to Denmark, stressed that for the U.S. "ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity." The American politician expressed interest in buying Greenland from Denmark back in 2019. Then he received a rejection.
