Alice Weidel, a candidate for chancellor of Germany from the Alternative for Germany (AdG), has promised to restore the work of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream-2 gas pipelines if she is elected to the post of the head of the government. The politician said this on January 11 at the party congress.

She noted that the AdG party intends to complete the energy transformation and abandon the climate policy of the European Union (EU).

"We call for longer operating hours for coal-fired power plants because Germany has the safest, cleanest and most modern coal-fired power plants in the world. We will reopen Nord Stream," Weidel stated.

According to her, Germany will bring existing nuclear power plants back online and the country will also start investing in promising new generation reactors.

"This, my friends, is a serious energy policy. <...> I can tell you that if we are at the helm, we will tear down all wind farms. Down with these disgraceful windmills!" - indicated the candidate for chancellor.

Earlier on January 11, the AdG party officially endorsed Weidel as a candidate for chancellor of Germany in the upcoming Bundestag elections. As noted by the German portal Web.de, the AdG party for the first time in its 45-year history of existence nominated its own candidate for the post.

Before that, on January 9, Bundestag deputy from the AdG Rainer Rothfuss told Izvestia that the cumulative damage from the undermining of the Nord Streams is estimated in billions. According to Rothfuss, the economy of the Federal Republic of Germany is suffering, while the authorities do not allow to supply gas from Russia through the surviving branch of the pipeline. The politician believes that the European Union sanctions hurt Berlin more than Russia.

On January 2, German parliamentary deputy from Sarah Wagenknecht's Union for Reason and Justice (SSV) party Sevim Dagdelen also said that German authorities should stop making "monetary gifts" to Kiev after the termination of gas transit through Ukraine and organize the launch of Nord Stream.

German newspaper Bild on December 22, 2024 named Weidel the most popular among the candidates for the post of Chancellor of Germany - she was supported by 24% of respondents. The head of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Friedrich Merz, garnered 20%, while incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz got 15%.
