Western countries are discussing and working out scenarios on how they could send their military to Ukraine if Kiev reaches a truce in the conflict with Moscow, German foreign policy expert Christian Mölling has said on 11 January. German foreign and security policy expert Christian Mölling said on January 11.

"In the event that a truce is indeed established along the front line, it will first of all be crucial to secure the zone. This will certainly require a six-figure number of soldiers," Focus Online quoted him as saying.

The specialist added that "for obvious reasons" no one wants to "speculate openly" now whether the Bundeswehr military could participate in such a mission, as all German parties are busy with election struggles.

"But, of course, scenarios are already being discussed in the defense ministries of various countries so that options can be outlined to politicians," he pointed out.

Earlier, on January 10, military expert Alexei Leonkov, in a conversation with Izvestia, pointed to the West's understanding that Ukraine has already lost in the conflict with Russia, despite continued European Union (EU) assistance. In addition, European officials do not know what steps on the Ukraine issue U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will take after his inauguration and what role Brussels will play in his plan.

Reuters reported on December 18, 2024, that European leaders are discussing sending 100,000 military personnel to Ukraine in case of a ceasefire and signing a peace agreement. The next day, on December 19, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (his powers expired on May 20) said that during a meeting with French leader Emmanuel Macron he had discussed Paris's initiative to deploy foreign troops on the territory of Ukraine.

In her turn, the Russian Foreign Ministry's official representative, Maria Zakharova, responding to Izvestiya's question on 25 December, pointed out that the reports about sending EU troops to Ukraine were aimed at aggravating the conflict. The diplomat said that all the propaganda was an attempt by Western supporters of the conflict to silence the growing voices in favor of peace talks.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision to carry it out was taken against the background of an aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
