US President Joe Biden wants to raise energy prices with the help of sanctions. Zoltan Koskovic, an analyst at the Hungarian Center for Fundamental Rights, said on January 10.

"So, Biden's sanctions today are aimed at raising energy prices for everyone. Including Americans," he wrote on the X network (formerly Twitter).

According to Koshkovich, Biden delayed this decision because of the election, but now such a development is favorable to him, because all the blame for the coming problems is likely to fall on U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

Earlier in the day, the authorities in Washington and London expanded sanctions against Russia. The list included Gazprom Neft and its head Alexander Dyukov, Surgutneftegaz, Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev, and 100 Russian tankers. Reacting to this, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Izvestia that the outgoing U.S. president thus intends "not to leave a mark in history," but "only to leave a legacy" before his departure.

Rosatom, for its part, noted that the state corporation perceives anti-Russian Western sanctions as an element of unfair competition. The Russian company Gazprom Neft intends to continue its work despite the new sanctions measures by the US Treasury Department.

Back in November 2024, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said that Western sanctions will not lead to restrictions on Russia's foreign trade. According to him, all restrictions by Western countries first of all hit them.

Western countries increased sanctions pressure on Russia after the start of the special operation to protect civilians in Donbass, which was announced on February 24, 2022.
