The lifting of new US sanctions against the Russian energy complex may become part of a deal on Ukraine. A US Republican Party politician close to the emerging US administration of US President-elect Donald Trump said on January 10.

"Today's move by [US President Joe] Biden 's administration is significant in the sense that it provides the incoming Trump administration on watch with a favorable opportunity to make sanctions relief part of a potential peace plan on Ukraine," the interlocutor told TASS.

At the same time, the agency emphasized that Trump's transition team has not commented on its attitude to the new restrictions imposed by Biden's outgoing team and their threat to the US and global fuel markets.

Earlier in the day, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said that Trump would not be able to lift the imposed sanctions without congressional approval. Thus, he confirmed to journalists that it is necessary to appeal to the legislative branch of government to cancel such a decision.

At the same time, the authorities of Washington and London expanded sanctions against Russia. The list included Gazprom Neft and its head Alexander Dyukov, Surgutneftegaz, Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev, as well as 100 Russian tankers. Reacting to this, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Izvestia that the outgoing U.S. president thus intends "not to leave a mark in history," but "only to leave a legacy" before his departure.

Rosatom, for its part, noted that the state corporation perceives anti-Russian Western sanctions as an element of unfair competition. The Russian company Gazprom Neft intends to continue its work despite the new sanctions measures by the US Treasury Department.

Back in November 2024, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said that Western sanctions will not lead to restrictions on Russia's foreign trade. According to him, all restrictions by Western countries first of all hit them.

Western countries increased sanctions pressure on Russia after the start of the special operation to protect civilians in Donbass, which was announced on February 24, 2022.
