In case US President-elect Donald Trump wants to lift the new US sanctions imposed on the Russian energy sector, he will be able to do so only with the approval of Congress. This was stated by the representative of the White House National Security Council John Kirby on January 10.

Thus, he confirmed to journalists that for the annulment of such a decision it is necessary to appeal to the legislative branch, adds "Gazeta.Ru".

"These sanctions are executive actions taken by President [US President Joe] Biden. I would leave it to the next administration to decide what further executive action they might take," Kirby indicated at the briefing. The broadcast was streamed on the White House's YouTube channel.

Earlier in the day, authorities in Washington and London expanded sanctions against Russia. The list included Gazprom Neft and its head Alexander Dyukov, Surgutneftegaz, Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev, as well as 100 Russian tankers. Reacting to this, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Izvestia that the outgoing U.S. president thus intends "not to leave a mark in history," but "only to leave a legacy" before his departure.

Rosatom, for its part, noted that the state corporation perceives anti-Russian Western sanctions as an element of unfair competition. The Russian company Gazprom Neft intends to continue its work despite the new sanctions measures by the US Treasury Department.

Back in November 2024, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said that Western sanctions will not lead to restrictions on Russia's foreign trade. According to him, all restrictions by Western countries first of all hit them.

Western countries increased sanctions pressure on Russia after the start of the special operation to protect civilians in Donbass, which was announced on February 24, 2022.
