TheUnited States is likely to impose sanctions on Russia's oil industry, the restrictions may affect about 180 tankers. This was reported by Reuters on January 10.
The agency refers to a document, presumably drawn up in the U.S. Treasury Department and distributed among traders in Europe and Asia. Reuters indicated that it has not been able to verify the authenticity of this document.
It states that in addition to 180 vessels, the restrictions will affect dozens of traders, two major oil companies and several executives from Russia's oil sector.
In addition, sources in the Indian oil industry specified to Reuters that the restriction may affect Ingosstrakh and AlfaStrakhovanie.
The agency noted that after reports of these possible restrictions, world oil prices rose by 3%.
The day before, on January 9, Reuters reported that the current U.S. leader Joe Biden will announce a new package of anti-Russian sanctions. It was specified that the restrictions will affect the Russian economy, and the US administration with their help wants to strengthen the position of Ukraine before the arrival of US President-elect Donald Trump in the White House.
The next day, January 10, the British newspaper Financial Times reported that the EU fears that Trump will cancel the anti-Russian sanctions imposed by Biden. At the same time, the president-elect will proceed exactly from the fact that the restrictions were adopted by his predecessor, and will not think how the rejection of the restrictions will affect his European allies.
Before that, on December 16, 2024, the EU foreign ministers finally approved the 15th package of economic and individual sanctions against Russia. The list included 54 individuals and 30 organizations.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on December 18 called the new package of restrictions illegal, pointing out that these restrictions threaten global energy security.
Western countries have tightened sanctions pressure on Russia in connection with the special operation to protect Donbass. The decision to launch it was announced on February 24, 2022 after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
