Denmark will not be able to defend the autonomy of Greenland if US President-elect Donald Trump decides to join the States militarily, as Copenhagen has sent most of its armaments to Kiev. This was stated by the American newspaper Politico on January 10, citing sources.

Thus, according to the statistics cited by the publication, the US has the largest defense budget, and the number of soldiers is about 1.3 million people, while Denmark has only 17 thousand military personnel, and most of its heavy military equipment was transferred to Ukraine.

"Greenland has no defense capability. The Americans will be at the helm," this opinion was expressed by Ulrik Pram Gad, a senior researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies.

In addition, he said that the Danish coast guard ships are not equipped with software necessary for target shooting.

The material noted that Denmark is depleted because of the supply of weapons to Ukraine and its financing. The publication emphasized that Copenhagen, in the case of the embodiment of Trump's threat to annex Greenland by force, can only rely on military assistance from NATO and European Union (EU) allies.

Earlier in the day, American political scientist Malek Dudakov expressed the opinion that extravagant statements and publications about the annexation of Canada and Greenland to the United States are used by Trump to influence the domestic political situation in these countries.

At the same time, the US President-elect published a video where Greenlanders ask him to buy the island. In the footage, some of the islanders are in MAGA caps and answer questions. In the course of communication it became clear that they consider Trump a strong leader and are ready to become part of America. Locals, in turn, said that the participants of the video are socially vulnerable citizens bribed with a dinner at the hotel.

On January 7, Donald Trump - Jr, son of the US president-elect, flew to Greenland for a personal visit. He commented on his upcoming trip in a podcast the day before, January 6, noting that it was planned at a time when his father was once again talking about buying the island.

Earlier, on December 22, 2024, Trump, announcing the appointment of an ambassador to Denmark, stressed that for the U.S. "ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity." The American politician expressed interest in buying Greenland from Denmark back in 2019. Then he received a refusal.
