Moscow court extends arrest of former State Duma deputy Abeltsev in fraud case


Moscow 's Tverskoy court has extended the detention of former member of the LDPR supreme council and former State Duma deputy Sergei Abeltsev, accused of fraudulent actions in an attempt to sell the position of deputy's assistant for a fee. This was reported by the correspondent of "RIA Novosti" from the courtroom on January 10.
It is specified that the man will be under arrest until June 23. Lawyers asked to release the suspect on personal surety, bail because of health problems.
The investigation's petition for Abeltsev's arrest came to the court on July 18, 2024. The judge granted it on the same day. As follows from the court data, the criminal case against the politician was initiated under part 4 of article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Fraud committed by an organized group or on a particularly large scale or entailed deprivation of the right of a citizen to residential premises").
The investigation found that Abeltsev deliberately reported false information that he allegedly had acquaintances and connections with high-ranking persons from among the deputies of the State Duma.
Sergei Abeltsev was born in 1961 in Moscow, graduated from the Moscow Higher Combined Arms Command School named after the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR, after which he served in the army. In 1991, Abeltsev became an aide to Vladimir Zhirinovsky. The politician was a deputy of four convocations of the State Duma.
