Trudeau recalled jokingly suggesting Trump trade part of Canada for a U.S. state

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told how during a private meeting with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump jokingly offered him to exchange part of the country for one of the American states. This was reported by MSNBC on Friday, January 10.
"Actually, at some point this topic came up, and then we started thinking about it in different ways. <...> And when I started suggesting, 'Well, maybe we could trade Vermont or California for certain parts of [Canada],'" Trudeau shared.
Trump, the Canadian prime minister continued, immediately decided that this conversation was "not so funny anymore" and moved on to another topic, Gazeta.Ru added.
Trump voiced the assumption that Canada could become a new American state during a meeting with Trudeau on December 3 last year. Then he added that the accession could materialize if Ottawa fails to solve the problem of illegal migration and drug smuggling.
Later, on January 7 this year, Trump published a map with Canada annexed to the US on his Truth Social network. On the same day, he said Greenland should become part of the US to ensure national security and defense against alleged Chinese and Russian threats. At the same time, Trudeau also rejected Trump's proposal for Canada to become the 51st state of the US. Reacting to this, billionaire Ilon Musk, addressing Trudeau, called him a girl and pointed out that he no longer decides anything.
In turn, Canadian Ontario Premier Doug Ford on January 7 offered to purchase Alaska amid Trump's statement. Ford added that under his watch, the annexation of Canada to the United States will not happen.
That said, CNN reporter Haley Talbot reported on January 9 that senators in the United States did discuss with Trump the possibility of Canada joining the United States. According to her, Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin described the discussion with the words "it was fun".
