- A political analyst explained Trump's statements about Canada and Greenland joining the US

Extravagant statements and publications on the accession of Canada and Greenland to the United States are used by the elected President of the United States Donald Trump to influence the domestic political situation in these countries. This opinion was expressed by American political scientist Malek Dudakov on Friday, January 10.
Trump voiced the assumption that Canada could become a new American state during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on December 3. At the time, he added that an annexation could materialize if Ottawa failed to address illegal migration and drug smuggling.
Later, on January 7, Trump published a map with Canada annexed to the US on his Truth Social network, RT reported. On the same day, he said that Greenland should become part of the US to ensure national security and defense against alleged Chinese and Russian threats, according to the website kp.ru.
Dudakov noted that in Canada, Trump's pressure and threats have already led to the collapse of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government and likely early elections. According to the political analyst, they will be won by the Conservatives led by Pierre Poilievre - a man of right-wing views, who is called the Canadian Trump.
"I quite admit that Trump is thus trying to conduct a soft operation of regime change in order to bring to power people close to himself in views, in the same Canada and then with them to agree on everything in the contradictions that exist there and in migration issues, and in trade issues, tariff policy and so on," - said the political scientist in conversation with Lenta.Ru.
According to the Americanist, Trump will follow the same strategy with regard to other Western countries, where his supporters are also discussing the possibility of a change of power.
In Greenland, too, elections will be held soon, and Trump hopes for a change of leaders, since in 2021 the party in power banned foreign companies from mining, the political scientist believes.
"According to various estimates, there are 1.5-2 million tons of rare earth metals there. If it is possible to somehow agree with Denmark and Greenland, I quite admit that American companies will be able to get access to these deposits, and thus Trump will try to reduce US dependence on imports of rare earth metals from China," he concluded.
On January 8, Trudeau rejected Trump's proposal to make Canada the 51st state of the United States. He emphasized that Canada and the United States are the most important partners in trade and security and the peoples of both countries benefit from such cooperation, reports NSN.
In turn, the Prime Minister of the Canadian province of Ontario Doug Ford on January 7 offered to acquire Alaska on the background of Trump's statement, reports 360.ru. Ford added that under his watch, the annexation of Canada to the United States will not happen.
