Current US President Joe Biden may impose additional sanctions on Russia as his administration seeks to leave a heavy legacy to US leader-elect Donald Trump. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on January 10.

"We are aware that the [Biden] administration will try to leave a heavy legacy in terms of bilateral relations to incoming Trump and his associates. In line with these efforts, it is quite possible, of course, that another batch [of sanctions] could be imposed," Peskov said during the briefing.

On January 9, Reuters said Biden would announce a new package of anti-Russian sanctions. It was reported that he plans to impose new restrictions against the Russian economy to strengthen Ukraine 's position before Trump takes office.

Earlier, on December 16, the EU foreign ministers finally approved the 15th package of economic and individual sanctions against Russia. The list includes 54 individuals and 30 organizations.

On December 18, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the 15th package of restrictions illegal and pointed out that it threatens global energy security.

Western countries have tightened sanctions pressure on Russia in connection with the special operation to protect Donbas. The decision to launch it was announced on February 24, 2022 after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
