Lithuania is an unfriendly state hostile to Russia, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on January 10, commenting on Lithuanian President Ginatas Nausseda's statements that the Kaliningrad Region is part of "Little Lithuania."

"Lithuania is an unfriendly state for our country, a state hostile to us, which, including, as it turns out, has territorial claims," Peskov said.

The Kremlin spokesman added that this justifies "all current and future measures" to ensure Russia's security.

The day before, Nauseda called Russia's decision to re name a museum dedicated to Lithuanian poet Kristijonas Donelaitis, located in the Kaliningrad region, an attempt to rewrite history. He added that despite the complete disappearance of the original inhabitants of "Lithuania Minor", the last traces of Lithuanian culture in the city should be preserved.

The next day, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova responded to Nauseda's words by advising Lithuanian politicians to learn history.

Before that, in December 2024, Zakharova said that Russia had announced pre-trial claims to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia because of discrimination against Russians in these countries. According to her, all available international judicial mechanisms will be used against the states that discriminate on their territories.
