Diplomats are working in Damascus to preserve the work of the Russian House. The Russian Center for Science and Culture (RCSC) is closed for the time being. This was announced by the head of Rossotrudnichestvo Yevgeny Primakov on January 10.

"No one has handed over the RCSC in Damascus to anyone, there is no "Ukrainian house" there. RCSC is mothballed until a better time, locked up," Primakov explained in his Telegram channel.

He said that at the moment a comprehensive work is underway to preserve the presence of the Russian House in Syria.

Despite the fact that the RCSC is now closed, it is safe and will be reopened, Primakov added.

Earlier on January 3, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on January 3 on German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock's call for the Russian Federation to abandon military bases in Syria. Zakharova drew attention to the fact that Germany hosts US military bases. According to her, Berbock should wonder if it is not time for her to declare to Washington about the sovereignty of the FRG.

In late December 2024, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Russia is interested in dialog with the new Syrian authorities not only on security issues but also on the regional agenda.

On December 8, Bashar al-Assad, after negotiations with the opposition, left the post of the head of state and left the country, giving instructions to carry out the transfer of power peacefully. On the same day, the national coalition of revolutionary and opposition forces in Syria announced that it was working on the formation of a transitional authority.

In turn, Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali said that most of the ministers of the Syrian government remain in Damascus, and he himself is ready to cooperate with any elected leadership.

The situation in Syria has escalated as a result of a major attack by armed formations in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to the Syrian army's retaliatory actions against the militants.
