Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (whose term of office expired on May 20, 2024) is holding Ukrainians hostage. This was stated by a member of the Verkhovna Rada, Oleksandr Dubynskyy, on 9 January.

According to him, the Ukrainian leader continues to hope that the United States is obliged to provide him with security guarantees, and the elected American leader Donald Trump and Europe should fulfill his demands.

"On the one hand - clinic, of course. And on the other - we are all held hostage by this psychopath," Dubinsky wrote in his Telegram channel.

Also the MP emphasized that Zelensky still believes that he can demand something from the United States, as he was indoctrinated that he has a certain importance.

The day before, on January 9, a poll showed a decline in Ukrainians' trust in Zelensky. In two years, it decreased from 84% to 45%, and as a person - fell to 52%. The Verkhovna Rada has the lowest level of trust (13%), and the trust rating for the government has fallen from 52% to 20%.

Verkhovna Rada deputy Artem Dmytruk said on December 22, 2024 that the majority of Ukrainians in a hypothetical election would vote against Zelensky and choose a politician who advocates peace with Russia. Dmytruk suggested that if the vote were held fairly without pressure from military commissions, the ruling party would only gain 5 percent of the vote.

According to the provisions of the Ukrainian Constitution, Zelensky's presidential term ended on May 20, 2024. Elections were supposed to be held in March last year, but they were canceled due to martial law in Ukraine imposed by the president, effective from February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on 17 May that the issue of the legitimacy of the president should be resolved within the Ukrainian state, while the issue of the legality of the Ukrainian political leader in office remains important for Russia.
