The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has tightened guidelines on the use of Russian airspace and recommended airlines to fly around almost the entire European part of the country. This is reported in a statement on the agency's website on January 9.

"It is recommended to refrain from flying in the affected Russian airspace west of the 60th meridian of east longitude at all flight echelons," the regulator notified.

It is specified that the recommendation applies to foreign air carriers that have received safety authorization from EASA. It will be valid until July 31, 2025, and may be revised, adapted or withdrawn earlier depending on the safety assessment.

Earlier on December 30 last year, Israeli airline El Al suspended flights from Tel Aviv to Moscow until the end of March 2025 following the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane near Aktau.

A passenger plane of Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), heading on the Baku-Grozny route, crashed near the Kazakh city of Aktau on December 25. A criminal case was opened after the incident. There were 62 passengers and five crew members on board, 38 bodies were found at the crash site. Of the crew, three people survived. Seven Russians died in the airplane crash, nine Russian citizens survived. Later, a special airplane of the Russian Emergencies Ministry took them to Moscow.
