Russia will take into account in its military planning the US attempts to ensure national security with the help of Greenland. This was announced by Russian Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir Barbin on January 9.

"The issue of Greenland's fate should be decided on the basis of the will of the Greenlanders themselves, within the framework of the current Danish legislation and without interference from outside," the diplomat told RIA Novosti.

According to Barbin, the Russian Federation is making efforts to strengthen stability in the Arctic. The ambassador said that this can be realized only with the formation of international security on an equal basis with all Arctic states.

A day earlier, future presidential national security adviser Mike Walz said that Greenland is important for U.S. national security .

The day before, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that US President-elect Donald Trump's desire to establish control over Greenland is "not the best" idea. He noted that establishing control over the island will not materialize.

Earlier, on January 8, the media reported on Trump's desire to establish control over Greenland to send a "strong signal" to Beijing.

Prior to that, on January 7, Aja Chemnitz, a member of the Danish Greenlandic parliament, said that Greenland is not for sale and will not be sold. However, he noted that Denmark could work more closely with the United States on business development.

On December 22, 2024, Trump, announcing the appointment of an ambassador to Denmark, called it an "absolute necessity" for the United States to own and control Greenland. The American politician expressed interest in buying Greenland from Denmark back in 2019. Then he received a rejection. Members of the Danish Parliament condemned the return of the American president-elect to the topic of buying the island, called his statement unacceptable and characterized these words as a "cynical policy of a superpower".
