The Danish authorities have approached US President-elect Donald Trump with a proposal for dialog after his statements on the purchase of Greenland. This was reported on January 9 by the Danish newspaper Politiken.

"We have offered a conversation. And I believe it will happen. But I don't think it will happen before January 20," Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said at a press conference after a meeting with representatives of parliamentary parties.

Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, who on January 8 denied information about a foreign policy crisis, said people should take the U.S. leader-elect's remarks more calmly. In his opinion, Trump can be taken seriously, one should not take his words literally.

"We see that there are some legitimate American interests and we want to have a dialog with the United States about that. I think we should have patience," the Danish foreign minister said.

Parliamentarian Pelle Dragsted of the Red-Green Coalition party said he was concerned about the government's lack of understanding of the implications for Denmark that will emerge with Donald Trump's arrival in the White House."

Earlier, on January 7, Greenland's Danish Member of Parliament Aja Chemnitz said that Greenland is not and will not be for sale, but Denmark can cooperate more with the United States. The politician emphasized that building closer contacts with the US is as important for Greenland as maintaining cooperation with Denmark.

On the same day, Donald Trump Jr, son of the US president-elect, flew to Greenland for a personal visit. Trump Jr. commented on his upcoming trip in a podcast the day before, on January 6, noting that it was planned at a time when his father was once again talking about buying the island.

Also on January 6, King Frederick X of Denmark changed the state's coat of arms and Greenland and the Faroe Islands became more prominent on it. The Guardian noted that this could be seen as a rebuke to Trump.

Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said on December 25 that the country had prepared a new defense package to protect Greenland, with at least $1.5 billion allocated.

Earlier, on December 22, 2024, Trump, announcing the appointment of an ambassador to Denmark, stressed that for the U.S. "ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity." The American politician expressed interest in buying Greenland from Denmark back in 2019. Then he received a rejection.
