Russian Foreign Ministry welcomes Indonesia's accession to BRICS

Russia welcomes Indonesia's accession to BRICS as a full member. The Russian Foreign Ministry said on its website on January 9.
"The Russian Federation welcomes the accession of the Republic of Indonesia to BRICS as a full member from January 1, 2025. Indonesia's candidacy was presented and pre-approved as part of the "first wave" of the association's expansion at the summit in Johannesburg (South Africa) in 2023," the ministry said in a statement.
Indonesia's formal request was temporarily postponed until President-elect Prabowo Subianto officially took office in 2024, and the request was submitted after his inauguration in October. It was supported by all BRICS member states.
The Russian Foreign Ministry recalled that Indonesia is the largest economically and the most populous country in Southeast Asia. The country favors multilateral cooperation based on mutual respect, openness, solidarity and pragmatism. Jakarta's accession to BRICS will help further strengthen the credibility of the association and continue to unite the Global South and East on the way to the formation of a multipolar world order.
Earlier on January 6, the government of Brazil, which serves as the 2025 BRICS chair, officially announced Indonesia's accession to the association. The republic's membership was approved under the BRICS expansion guidelines, criteria and procedures.
BRICS is an interstate association of countries. On the eve of the summit in Kazan, held from October 22 to 24, 2024, 35 applications were received to join the association. On January 1, 2025, Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan joined as partners.
