Mironov pointed out the risk for the U.S. of losing Alaska
The reason for the possible return of Alaska to Russia will arise if U.S. President-elect Donald Trump does not change his plans for the Arctic. This was stated by the leader of the party "Just Russia - For Truth" Sergei Mironov in his Telegram-channel on January 9.
"Whoever is thinking of reshaping the political map should realize that he is opening Pandora's box, because other countries have their own interests and ambitions. In the case of Trump's plans in the Arctic, the question of returning Alaska to Russia inevitably arises," the message reads.
He added that Russia has much more grounds to claim Alaska than the United States to talk about joining Canada and Greenland.
On January 9, it became known that senators in the United States discussed with the President-elect the possibility of including Canada in the United States as the 51st state.
Earlier, on January 7, Trump said that Greenland should become part of the United States to ensure national security and protection from alleged Chinese and Russian threats. The president-elect also pointed to the increasing presence of Russia and China in the Arctic region, specifying that their ships can already be found near Greenland. In this regard, Trump offered the island his defense.
In December, Trump, announcing the appointment of an ambassador to Denmark, emphasized that for the United States "the possession and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity." The American politician expressed interest in buying Greenland from Denmark back in 2019. Then he received a rejection.
