- Peskov recalled the situation with Turkey and the EU after the decision of the Armenian Cabinet of Ministers

The decision on the accession of countries to the European Union (EU) is made in Brussels, and Armenia, after deciding to take a course on integration into the association, should remember that Turkey has not been accepted there after years. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on January 9.
"Here we still need to understand what the EU's position on this issue is. We are well aware of the example of the Republic of Turkey, which has maintained its orientation toward EU membership for many decades, but has not met with much reciprocity from Brussels," Peskov said.
He reminded that Armenia is a member state of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and it is hypothetically impossible to be a part of such different organizations, moreover, membership in the EAEU for Armenia, obviously, brings significant benefits and dividends.
Earlier in the day, the Armenian government approved a draft law on starting the process of joining the EU. The country's Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan drew attention to the fact that the relations between Yerevan and the association have been developing "intensively and dynamically" in recent years. For example, the EU has provided assistance to the country in the security sphere and showed that it is ready to help the state in its economic development.
On November 22, 2024, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that the country's residents are positively disp osed to the course aimed at rapprochement with the EU. The head of the government then pointed out that the statement against the referendum on European integration is not supported by political logic.
Back in April, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova pointed out that the West is only using Yerevan to "fuel the fire" in the Caucasus region. Armenian Ambassador to the EU Tigran Balayan, in turn, noted that the turn of the state's foreign policy towards rapprochement with the union does not threaten Russia's interests in the Transcaucasus.
Before that, in March, Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Paruyr Hovhannisyan said that Yerevan was developing a new document on cooperation with the EU. If the agreement is fully implemented, the state will receive "the status of readiness of a candidate country for EU membership.
