The material reports that Biden plans to introduce new sanctions against the Russian economy to strengthen the position of Ukraine before the entry into office of the elected American leader Donald Trump.

Earlier, on December 11, 2024, Bloomberg agency, citing sources, reported that the Biden administration plans to strengthen sanctions against oil exports from Russia. It was noted that the American president has long resisted this step, as there are concerns about a jump in energy prices. However, "the Biden administration is now open to more aggressive actions" because of the fall in oil prices.
On December 16, EU foreign ministers gave final approval to the 15th package of economic and individual sanctions against Russia. The list of sanctions included 54 individuals and 30 organizations. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the 15th package of restrictions illegal and pointed out that it threatens global energy security.
Western countries have tightened sanctions pressure on Russia in connection with the special operation to protect Donbass. The decision to launch it was announced on February 24, 2022 after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
