- Peskov linked the energy crisis in Transnistria to the decisions of Ukraine and Moldova

Transnistria has found itself in a crisis situation due to the decisions of Ukraine and Moldova. This was stated by the press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitriy Peskov, on January 9.
"For many years, the Russian Federation has been supplying gas, at the expense of which Transnistria existed," he said.
Peskov noted that now, due to Ukraine's decision and Moldavia's actions, Transnistria has been deprived of this opportunity and finds itself in a crisis situation.
On January 9, Transnistria's Foreign Minister Vitaly Ignatiev said that the unrecognized republic had recorded cases of deaths of people trying to warm themselves as a result of the energy crisis. He added that it was impossible to increase electricity generation in the republic without gas supplies, which is why Transnistria continues to consider Russia as a gas supplier.
Earlier, on January 8, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development of the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic (TMR) Sergei Obolonik said that Transnistria is in a state of not only energy but also humanitarian crisis.
In Transnistria, from January 7, twice a day for four hours, there will be fan blackouts of electric power. Residents of the region told Izvestia about adapting to life without gas.
On January 1, 2025, Gazprom stopped supplying fuel to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system. The state corporation noted that this happened due to Ukraine's refusal to extend the agreements. After that, on January 3, DMR President Krasnoselsky said that 1.5 thousand high-rise and 72 thousand private houses in Transnistria were left without heat and gas.
Back in August 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (his term of office expired in May 2024) said that Kiev would not extend the gas transit agreement with Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out that Moscow was not giving up gas supplies through Ukrainian territory.
