Peskov says Russia interested in objective investigation of Aktau disaster

Moscow is interested in an objective and impartial investigation into the air crash near Aktau. This was stated by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov at a briefing on January 9.

"We are interested in an absolutely objective impartial investigation in order to determine the causes of this disaster," he emphasized.

He also recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin apologized to the Azerbaijani side. The leaders of the two countries spoke twice by phone. The parties gave the necessary instructions to the investigative bodies, Peskov pointed out.

The presidential spokesman added that all necessary assistance is being provided in the investigation of the circumstances of the accident.

A passenger plane of Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), heading on the route Baku - Grozny, crashed near the Kazakh city of Aktau on December 25. A criminal case was opened after the incident. There were 62 passengers and five crew members on board, 38 bodies were found at the crash site. Of the crew, three people survived. Seven Russians died in the airplane crash, nine Russian citizens survived. Later, a special airplane of the Russian Emergencies Ministry took them to Moscow.

The commission to investigate the crash flew to Brazil with the black boxes on December 29. It was specified that together with CENIPA investigators, three specialists from Kazakhstan, three from Azerbaijan and three from Russia will take part in the decoding. The preliminary results of the investigation of the plane crash will be made public within 30 days.
