Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo called stable gas supplies to the republic at affordable prices the main result of talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. This was reported by Reuters on January 8.

"I needed to ensure at least gas supplies for domestic consumption in Slovakia. We did it," the agency quotes Fitzo as saying.

It is reported that the Prime Minister accused Ukraine of damaging Slovakia because of its refusal to extend the agreement on the transit of Russian gas through the Ukrainian territory. He threatened that he would cut benefits to Ukrainian refugees and stop supplying electricity to Ukraine from Slovakia.

On January 7, Fitzo said that Ukrainian representatives would not attend the European Commission (EC) talks on gas transit. He noted that the meeting will be held in Brussels on January 9, it will discuss the issue of the unilateral decision of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (term of office expired on May 20, 2024) to stop gas transit to Europe through the territory of the state.

Earlier, on January 1, Fitzo said that stopping Russian gas transit through Ukraine would have drastic consequences for the European Union (EU), but not for Russia.

"Gazprom" announced the suspension of gas supplies through Ukraine on January 1.

In late August 2024, Zelensky said Ukraine would not renew its gas transit agreement with Russia, which expires at the end of 2024. Putin later said that the country did not refuse to transit gas through Ukrainian territory.
