Russian gas, which was supplied free of charge to Transnistria, was a form of humanitarian aid. This was stated by the president of the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic (TMR), Vadim Krasnoselsky, on 8 January after a meeting of the Security Council, a fragment of which was published on the Telegram channel of the head of the republic.

It is reported that the Security Council discussed the energy crisis in the region.

"The gas that was supplied to Transnistria was a form of humanitarian and technical assistance that Russia provided to our state in connection with destructive actions of Moldova," the report said.

Krasnoselsky also noted that the republic's authorities sent Russia twice a month reports on the expenditure of funds received for gas so that all spending was as transparent as possible.

Earlier in the day, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development of the unrecognized DMR Sergei Obolonik said that Transnistria is in a state of not only energy but also humanitarian crisis. Thus, according to him, the 13 million cubic meters of gas reserved for Transnistria ensure the supply of a number of social institutions and other important facilities, as well as residential apartment buildings for cooking. Obolonik added that the resources will be sufficient only for 3.5 weeks.

In Transnistria, from January 7, the electricity will be switched off twice a day for four hours. Residents of the region told Izvestia about adapting to life without gas.

On January 1, 2025, Gazprom stopped supplying fuel to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system. The state corporation noted that this happened due to Ukraine's refusal to extend the agreements. After that, on January 3, DMR President Krasnoselsky said that 1.5 thousand high-rise and 72 thousand private houses in Transnistria were left without heat and gas.

Back in August 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (his term of office expired in May 2024) said that Kiev would not extend the gas transit agreement with Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out that Moscow was not giving up gas supplies through Ukrainian territory.
