- Media pointed out the senselessness of Trump's threats to Putin over the conflict in Ukraine

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's threats to Vladimir Putin when trying to resolve the conflict in Ukraine will be useless and will not have the expected impact. Arkady Moses, director of the Russian Studies Program at the Finnish Institute of International Relations, said in an article for the 19FortyFive portal on January 8.
"Verbal pressure on Putin from the White House will not bear fruit," the researcher said.
He said Moscow remembers Trump's actions during his first presidential term, when he lifted a ban on the supply of lethal weapons to Kiev and the supply of Javelin anti-tank systems to Ukraine.
Moses noted that the Russian leader owes nothing to the US president-elect.
The publication reports that threatening Russia with sanctions will not work, as Moscow has managed to adapt to the large-scale restrictions imposed by Western countries. In addition, the increase in sanctions pressure will have negative consequences for the United States.
"Every U.S. president, from Bill Clinton to Donald Trump, has tried to improve or reset U.S.-Russian relations. And each time, the relationship has been worse at the end of the president's term than it was at the beginning. "The structural reasons for this are many and impossible to explain in a nutshell, but the bottom line is that the promise of another 'normalization' will not be perceived in Moscow as a credible offer," Moses added.
Earlier in the day, the Pentagon said Putin has no intention of giving up on the conflict in Ukraine. Washington is reportedly focused on providing Ukraine with the necessary funds to fight. According to a military official, the US is working on new contracts to supply weapons to Kiev in 2025 and 2026.
The day before, Trump said that he understands the position of Russia, which opposes Ukraine's membership in NATO. In addition, the politician said that he was aware of Vladimir Putin 's readiness to establish contact with the United States, but considered it unacceptable before his official return to the White House.
On this day, Trump said at a press conference at his residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, that the conflict in Ukraine was the result of the "fiasco" of the current US President Joe Biden and that this crisis might not have arisen at all if the American leader had been different. According to him, because of the steps of the head of state, the situation on the Ukrainian side risks additional escalation, and the conflict itself is a catastrophe in which people die every day.
Before that, on December 27, 2024, it was reported that Trump intends to end the conflict in Ukraine, but probably believes that this is possible if Kiev is strong.
Trump's team said on Dec. 13 that it was discussing ending the Ukraine conflict with the current White House administration and Ukrainian officials. At the same time, Trump's special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg allowed the end of this crisis in the coming months.
Before that, on December 3, Kellogg 's plan for a Ukrainian settlement was published. It proposes to end the political isolation of the Russian Federation and retain the liberated territories. In addition, Trump's special envoy proposed to postpone Ukraine's accession to NATO for a long time. Nevertheless, Kellogg's plan includes continuing military assistance to Kiev and providing it with security guarantees.
