There will be particularly powerful solar flares in 2025

The peak of the current 11-year solar activity cycle was passed in 2024. However, on the decline, the strongest flares are possible. About this "Izvestia" told the Director of the Astronomical Observatory of Irkutsk State University and senior researcher at the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics SB RAS Sergey Yazev.
"I venture to say that the peak of the cycle we have already passed and in the new year of bright solar events will be less. However, as experience shows, strong solar flares are also possible on the downside of the cycle - single, but very strong. Therefore, we can expect that in 2025 solar flares can be particularly powerful," - said the scientist.
He explained that 11-year cycles can differ in the time of occurrence of both smaller and larger. In this case, the current cycle is ahead of schedule.
Sergei Yazev noted that the flares themselves do not threaten people, but sometimes because of them there is a so-called coronal ejection, when the electromagnetic forces on the Sun push a large number of charged particles (plasma) into space.
If the ejection is directed towards the Earth, then two days later the charged particles collide with the Earth's magnetic shell, which provokes its perturbation. It manifests itself on Earth in the form of geomagnetic storms.
