The deterioration of relations with Russia is harmful to France. This was stated by Francois Asselino, head of the People's Republican Union party, in an interview with Izvestia on January 8.

The politician called the times when relations between the states were good "great moments in the history of France". He noted that when relations were favorable, things "went well" in the country, while periods of conflict always affected the state negatively.

"We saw this, for example, under Napoleon and Alexander I. And when Napoleon invaded Russia, it was the end of the French Empire. <...> Every time there was a situation where France was really interested in having good relations with Russia. And when they don't get along, it's to our detriment, to France's detriment. We see this in the example of sanctions against Russia," Asselino said.

The politician noted that the state leaders thought they could "bring Russia to its economic knees," but, according to him, the opposite happened.

Asselino added that as long as France remains in the NATO-subordinate European Union (EU), it cannot provide a defense.

"The problem with building Europe is that states with legitimately different geopolitical interests are forced to pursue the same foreign policy, which is absurd. Therefore, I believe that as long as we remain in the European Union, which is subordinate to NATO, we will not be able to defend ourselves," the politician emphasized.

For a detailed interview with Francois Asselino see the program "Izvestia. Main" on Channel 5 on Sunday, January 12, at 00:00 Moscow time.

Earlier, on December 24, 2024, the Russian Embassy in Paris shared with Izvestia that French entrepreneurs regularly ask the agency to help them enter the Russian market. The diplomats noted that many small and medium-sized firms in France survive thanks to supplies to Russia.
