Israel's actions threaten the territorial integrity of Syria. This statement was made by Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) Vasily Nebenzya on January 8.

"We would like to emphasize the direct threat to the territorial integrity of Syria posed by Israel's illegal actions," he said at a UN Security Council (UNSC) meeting.

According to him, now 500 square kilometers of Syrian territories have already been seized.

He also emphasized that the Israeli state is also violating international law. He called on his colleagues on the Security Council and representatives of the UN secretariat to give an honest assessment of what is happening.

Nebenzya added that after the change of power in Syria, Russia intends to continue to provide Damascus with "multifaceted assistance," including the issue of supplying humanitarian aid to the territory.

The day before, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan estimated the damage to Syria at $500 billion. According to him, the Turkish expert groups that visited the country stated that the situation in the state is worse than expected.

Ruslan Andreev, an expert of the Polylog Group and political consultant, noted in a conversation with Izvestia on January 3 that Syria is actually divided between several quasi-state entities, and this factor, together with the external influence of Turkey and Israel, may lead to the Arab Republic breaking up into several separate territories. Nevertheless, it is still impossible to predict the exact development of events.

On December 19, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the main beneficiary of the events in Syria is Israel, the Russian Federation condemns the seizure of any Syrian territories and this position is not subject to adjustment.

On December 8, 2024, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, after negotiations with the opposition, left the post of head of state and left the country, instructing to carry out the transfer of power peacefully.

The situation in Syria escalated as a result of a major attack by armed formations in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28, 2024, and led to the Syrian army's retaliatory actions against the militants.
