In a new resolution, the European Parliament (EP) may demand that Georgia start a war with Russia. This was announced by the political council of the ruling Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia party on January 8.

Representatives of the political party recalled that the European Parliament has recently adopted five resolutions against Georgia. The documents demanded sanctions against Russia and the party's honorary chairman Bidzina Ivanishvili. Among them, the EP called for the release of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.

"Given this trend, it is likely that in the sixth resolution, the European Parliament will openly demand the start of war with Russia," Georgia Today quoted a statement as saying.

The day before, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze recommended French President Emmanuel Macron not to lie about Georgia and Russia. He advised the French leader to keep an eye on Ukraine, commenting on his words that Russia allegedly tried to destabilize the situation during the parliamentary elections in October 2024.

Georgia held parliamentary elections in October, which were won by the Georgian Dream. Former Georgian leader Salome Zurabishvili did not recognize the results of the vote, but was supported by three opposition political forces - United National Movement, Coalition for Change and Strong Georgia. For two days, on October 28 and 29, Georgia hosted an opposition march against the election results.

In 2017, Georgia officially abandoned the mixed system and became a parliamentary republic in which the president performs representative functions.
