Transnistria declared an energy and humanitarian crisis

Transnistria is in a state of not only energy but also humanitarian crisis. This was stated by the first deputy chairman of the government, minister of economic development of the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic (TMR), Sergei Obolonik, at a meeting of the security council on January 8.
"The country is in a state of not only energy but also humanitarian crisis. At the same time <...> the measures taken before the cessation of gas supplies to the republic have confirmed their effectiveness," the press service of the republic's president quoted him as saying.
Thus, according to him, the reserved 13 million cubic meters of gas ensure the supply of a number of social institutions and other important facilities, as well as residential apartment buildings for cooking. Obolonik added that the resources will be enough for only 3.5 weeks.
"Now the nationwide gas consumption is 270 thousand cubic meters. <...> The resource will be enough from today for another 24 days," he said, adding that this will result in a colossal increase in the load on power grids, as people will switch to electric heaters.
In Transnistria, from January 7, there will be fan blackouts of electric power twice a day for four hours. Residents of the region told Izvestia about adapting to life without gas.
On January 1, 2025, Gazprom stopped supplying fuel to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system. The state corporation noted that this happened due to Ukraine's refusal to extend the agreements. After that, on January 3, DMR President Vadim Krasnoselsky said that 1.5 thousand multi-storey and 72 thousand private houses in Transnistria were left without heat and gas.
Back in August 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (his term of office expired in May 2024) said that Kiev would not extend the gas transit agreement with Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out that Moscow was not giving up gas supplies through Ukrainian territory.
