U.S. top officials bid farewell to Jimmy Carter in Washington, D.C.

US dignitaries honored the memory of the 39th President Jimmy Carter in the central hall of the Capitol in Washington, where members of Congress also bid him farewell. Reuters reported on January 7.
"Jimmy Carter was a rare example of a gifted man who was also characterized by humility, modesty and grace," Vice President Kamala Harris said.
Republicans John Thune, leader of the Senate, and Mike Johnson, speaker of the House, also spoke.
The casket containing Carter's body will be displayed for a farewell in the Capitol Rotunda for the next three days so that members of Congress, former and current foreign heads of state, politicians and American citizens can pay their respects. The casket will then be sent by motorcade on Jan. 9 for a funeral at Washington Cathedral, where a memorial service will be held. Afterward, it will be flown by special airplane to Plains for burial.
Carter stayed in the White House for one term from 1977 to 1981.
On December 30, 2024, it was announced that former U.S. President Jimmy Carter had died at the age of 100. Carter entered home hospice care in February 2023 in Plains, Georgia, after a series of brief hospitalizations.
